From Ag Banker to Trusted Landowner Advocate
In the rolling fields of Northeast Iowa, Duane Tlusty’s name carries weight. After a 20-year career in agricultural banking, Duane left the desk behind to run his family's farming operation full-time and hasn’t looked back since. With over 1,000 acres under management, 500 more in custom farming, 7,500 hogs, and 150 feeder cattle, it’s safe to say he keeps busy.
But Duane’s story doesn’t stop with farming.
Discovering Boa Safra
Like many of our best partners, Duane’s introduction to Legacy Nutrient Deductions™ was personal. After purchasing a new farm, he stumbled across a Boa Safra advertisement and became curious. “I wanted to learn more, and I figured the best way to do that was to go through the process myself,” Duane said. After consulting with his tax advisor and reviewing the details, he enrolled 100 acres, and was impressed with the results.
That’s when the wheels started turning.
Leveraging a Deep Network
Duane recognized the value not just for himself, but for others in his community. “I told Kate at Boa Safra that I had friends, family, and old bank customers who could benefit. She mentioned I could earn commission as a referral partner, and I thought—why not?”
The rest is history.
Duane now helps others complete their Request for Service forms, gather documentation, and navigate the process—all while earning a referral bonus. “It’s a win-win,” he said. “I get to stay in touch with my old customers, help them improve their financial position, and make a few bucks doing it.”
Trusted Voice, Tangible Impact
As a former ag lender, Duane brings a level of credibility that builds instant trust. “People know I wouldn’t promote anything sketchy,” he said. “And once I show them my own report, walk them through the results, and explain how it works, they’re usually on board.”
The financial benefit to his network has been substantial. “It gives them an option to reduce their tax burden without needing to go out and buy expensive equipment just for a write-off,” Duane said. “It’s been impactful.”
Advice for New Referral Partners
His advice for others considering the program? Meet in person and start small. “Cold calling doesn’t always work,” Duane said. “Pick one or two people you are close to, drive to their farm, show them an example report, and walk them through how it works. That personal approach builds trust and helps them feel comfortable moving forward.”
Helping Others, Earning Along the Way
For Duane, it’s about more than profit. It’s about doing right by the people he’s built relationships with over decades. “I’ve always put the customer first. Helping people succeed just feels good.”
